Canon M50 4k video review

In the last video that I published on my youtube channel I talk about the 4k video that is coming out from the Canon M50.

Canon M50 was released back in March 2018 and it is the first Canon Mirrorless M series camera that is able to shoot in 4k. You often hear on the internet and here on youtube that Canon M50 4k footage is useless.

If you would like to watch my youtube video and check out Canon M50’s 4k video you can do it right here:

Canon M50 4k video test

Crop factor

The Canon M50 camera has a crop factor of 1.6 when you shoot on 1080p, that means the Sigma 16mm it’s like a 25.6mm on a full frame sensor. When you shoot in 4k there is an additional 1.6 crop factor that means a total crop factor of 2.56 so the Sigma 16mm lens it’s the equivalent of about 40mm on a full frame sensor.

Autofocus

The dual pixel autofocus is awesome on Canon M50 when you shoot on 1080p, but you don’t get that feature on 4k.

FPS

On Canon M50 you can shoot 4k videos only on 24 fps, not even 30 fps, so you can’t slow down the footage on your editing software of choice. You can’t shoot that incredible B Roll Commercials Peter Lindgren or Daniel Schiffer style. With that being said, I still think that 4k on Canon M50 is usable. If I didn’t convinced you checkout the my 4k video above.
